so, exactly how old do i look?

by @according2kelly on August 7, 2007

if you were to ask, which you haven’t, but i’ll tell you anyways, i think i look young. probably because i am young, or at least i think i’m young, but also because i feel young and because i dress young – i dress pretty similar to my 18-year old sister. (i still haven’t decided if that is a good thing or a bad thing.) anyway, on with my story. so last week i was feeling pretty good about myself. on 2 separate occasions i was told how young i look and that i definitely don’t look like i have 2 kids! the first person was the cashier at the gas station… he swore he knew me from high school. we were chatting and he kept asking me if i was sure i didn’t know him. finally he asked how old i was, when i replied “29″ he was blown away. nice little confidence booster. the second time i was in the bike shop looking for a trailer. the sales girl, who was probably about 18 herself, and i were discussing the different trailers. i told her i needed one that would hold two kids, and she just stared. kinda stuttering she repeated me: “two kids?” then she said “there is no way you have 2 kids. how old are you? i would have sworn you were 20.” let’s just say i left that store very happy & with a very nice bike trailer.

so that was saturday. the next day at church i was feeling pretty good. i had a cute outfit going, my hair was looking good and i was feeling young! i was talking to another gal who is home for the summer. she and her hubby live in Provo while he finishes up his last little bit of school. she’s a couple of years younger than me, but definitely no more than 5. after i walked away a little girl (who is probably about 11) came up to me and asked “is she your daughter?” totally stunned, it was my turn to stare. pointing to my friend i asked the little girl “you want to know if she’s MY daughter?” of course she replied “yes, she looks just like you.” i just kinda laughed and walked away.

i realize she is like 11 years old. i also realize that she probably thought she was my daughter because we are both blonde… but seriously, do i really look old enough to have a 25 year daughter?

remember when you were 11! 30 year olds were OLD. at least to me! now i am turning 33 this month and i am YOUNG! i feel like i am 18 still! it's all perspective which gets better(i think) as we get older! i've always been told that i looked young so i always wonder what people think when i'm dragging around 3 kids the oldest of which is almost 8. they prob. think i started when i was 15! oh well! i make sure i wear my wedding ring!!!!

don't listen to anyone under 15...of course they think you're old! it's like me now,...anyone under 25 thinks 40 is really old...so, it's just your perspective...of course...anyone over 65 is REALLY old!! jk...and you want to look young...never complain about that...plus...the older the better...that's the best one...

I just about die every time I go into the Gap, feeling young, and one of the employees refers to me as "M'am" without fail. (I am 32.) Also some of the college students who intern at my office answer me "Yes M'am" or call me "Ms. Natasha." That makes me feel sooooo old!

Loved this story Kelly! When I was getting to ready to graduate from college, I'd have strangers assume I meant I was a senior in highschool... HA! Now, I just get people thinking that I'm a nanny rather than my child's mother! Double HA!

Definitely go with the adults opinions. What do 11 year olds know anyway??!p.s. I emailed you and gave you my sister-in-law's email address. Let me know if you didn't get it.

I look like I'm about 15. And I'm 26. It's nice to get compliments. Not so nice constantly being asked by people in my building if I'm off from school that day. Uh, no dude, I graduated about, oh, 8 years ago! And when I get carded sometimes people just don't want to believe that my ID is correct. I had a cashier tell me I looked so young I could go back to high school. Um, no thanks!

You still look like a teenager. I'm finding it hard to pull off being 40 when my kids are in their 30's, but I'm trying!

Yesterday was my birthday. I turned 33. I had a coworker at work guess that I was 38. I guess I'm just extraordinarily mature...

I'd focus on the young adults thinking they were your peer. That's a huge compliment.

well i have had several occasions where people thought i was really really young like 16- 18-ish (i'm 26) i wasn't sure if i should be insulted or not.. there is a difference between looking young and looking juvenile! one time i was visiting my parents house and the UPS guy came to the door with a delivery of medications-he told me i needed to get my mom because he has to have an 18 or older person sign for it...

If you look old enough to have a 25-year-old daughter, then I look old enough to be your grandmother. Seriously, no. I had one of my young women tell me that I "looked pretty good for someone my age." Great. Thanks. Now I feel awesome.
