together counts {$100 sports authority giveaway}

by @according2kelly on May 25, 2011

my family & i (and were talking me, the hubbs, my 6 & 4 year old boys & even the 2 year old princess) are currently “in training” thanks to the together counts program. let’s face it, it’s so much easier to get motivated to be physically active when your “training,” as opposed to having to exercise. there’s something about calling it “training” that some how, some way makes making healthy meal choices, taking walks, going for bike rides & even the occasional jog around the block… actually fun for even the kids.

growing up, my parents took the saying the “family that plays {& eats} together, stays together” to heart. there weren’t a lot of hard & fast rules in our household as a child – but there was never any question about it… we ate dinner together every night as a family. & at least 3 days a week (but usually more) we played tennis together. on weeknights, when most of my friends were lounging on the couch watching tv or playing video games, you could find me on a tennis court, hitting balls with my dad, both my brothers, while my little sister chased down balls & my mom watched for the sidelines. on weekends, when all my friends were hanging at the mall, my family was usually traveling to, playing in, or cheering on of our siblings in a far-a-way tennis tournament.

at the time I was too oblivious (or young) to notice or recognize, the healthy habits these family activities were forming. but I can definitely credit these nightly dinners, as well as my tennis “training” with helping me live a more happy (& healthy) lifestyle. i’d go so far as saying that I’ve actually learned to even enjoy  (if not crave) exercise.

so far I haven’t been able to convince my little ones that playing tennis can be fun. but, after watching mom & dad race several triathlons, mountain bike & running races, they were extremely excited to pick a few races, & start their own “training.”

these days we spend our afternoons taking “training” laps around our neighborhood with an occasional foot race thrown in for fun (a little competition always gets the juices flowing). but the best part (besides all extra energy they’ve been expending)? my boys have totally learned to recognize the importance of healthy eating. while we’ve always made a point of eating dinner together as entire family, suddenly (& without me forcing it at all) they are wanting to be more involved in our menu planning & meal preparation… ensuring that we are eating lots of fruits & veggies giving them the “race energy” they need. now remember, they are 6 & 4 – so this is totally unexpected, but I’m LOVING it.

& now that we’ve taken “the pledge” (making a commitment to eating one meal a week, & doing one family activity together each week), my boys are more excited then EVER. They love being able to literally check off our meal or family activity on the together counts website. & while i’m not normally the pledge-making kind of girl, the commitment level is pretty easy (one meal & activity as a family per week), & i’m totally supportive of anything that encourages a happy & healthy lifestyle.

want to find out more about the together counts program? ready to take the pledge? find out more on the together counts website. come on already… take the pledge, you know you want too!

but, before you leave & make your very own pledge – i have a fun surprise. as an incentive to get your family happy & healthy, i am giving away a $100 sports authority gift card away to one lucky reader. (WAHOO!) ready for the nitty-gritty details?
