I’m so in love with all the ideas on this year’s Holiday Craft Along! And the timing couldn’t be better because it’s about 40 days till Christmas. Yes friends, you read that correctly… forty days!!! Eeeeek. I’m going to share some simple techniques for customizing dollar store frames – this craft can be used as holiday décor, custom hostess/family/neighbor gifts, or holiday ornaments. And it’s EASY.

dollar store frames

I’ll do separate directions for each piece so you can pick and choose the ones you want to make. But the supplies needed, overlap quite a bit. You probably have most of them already. AND this is a great project for all those extra extra scraps. I’ve also included links to the lettering I used, but get creative! How about the last name of your giftee or a special date… possibilities are endless!

supplies for dollar store frames

dollar store frame craft

#1

You’ll need: Mirror (it’s just bigger than a piece of paper), wreath, print the word PEACE (find mine here) on printer paper, spray adhesive, red spray paint, scissors, hot glue gun, ribbon.

1. Cut out the printed letters, be sure so save any floating pieces. Thick simple fonts work best for cutting, if you have a electronic cutter, use it! I used the Bernard MT Condensed font, all in uppercase.

2. Spray the BACK of the cut paper LIGHTLY with the adhesive and place on the bottom of the mirror. Be sure to stick on any of the floating pieces i.e. inside of the ‘P’ and ‘A’.

3. Cover any of exposed places on the mirror with paper and spray with red spray paint. Let dry.

4. Remove the paper and hot glue the wreath onto the top of the mirror. Use lots of hot glue!

5. Use a small piece of the ribbon to tie on the top of the wreath for hanging.

yarn wrapped frames#2 & #3

You’ll need: 3×5 frame/document size frame, yarn, small ornament, ribbon.

1. Remove the glass and backing from the frame and set aside.

2. Wrap the frame with yarn, secure the end with tight a slip knot. I wound the loose end piece as I wrapped to secure the yarn at the beginning and end, but you can use a hot glue gun if you like. Tip: The corners can be tricky. I like the messy look so I wrap like a crazy person. If you want a clean corner, you might want to practice a bit to get your groove.

3. Use ribbon to hang a small ornament in the center of the frame.

#4

You’ll need: The glass from the 3×5 frame used above, yarn, flat ornament (I used an angel) print the word joy (find mine here) on printer paper, spray adhesive, yellow spray paint, scissors, hot glue gun, ribbon

1. Cut out the printed letters, be sure so save the floating center of the ‘O’. Thick simple fonts work best for cutting, if you have a electronic cutter, use it! I used the Bernard MT Condensed font in all lowercase.

2. Spray the BACK of the cut paper LIGHTLY with the adhesive and place in the center of the glass. Be sure to stick on any of the middle of the ‘O’.

3. Spray with yellow spray paint. Let dry.

4. Hot glue yarn around the edges of the glass. I did one side at a time, running the yarn back and forth about 7 times per side. Then I went around all the side again, just to be sure I covered all the sharp edges.

5. Hot glue the ornament onto the back of the glass and thread a ribbon through the top of the ornament for hanging.

yarn wrapped frames with wording#5

You’ll need: The glass from the document frame used above, ric rac, small ornament (I used a tree) print ‘Merry Christmas’ (find mine here) on printer paper, spray adhesive, green spray paint, scissors, hot glue gun

1. Cut out the printed letters, be sure so save any floating pieces. Thick simple fonts work best for cutting, if you have a electronic cutter, use it! I used the Harlow Solid Italic font.

2. Spray the BACK of the cut paper LIGHTLY with the adhesive and place on the bottom of the mirror. Be sure to stick on any of those floating pieces!

3. Spray with yellow spray paint. Let dry.

4. Thread the small ornament with ric rac and hot glue to the front of the glass. Note: I left the edges exposed on this one because I just love the way it looks with the letters floating. Small hands can get cut, so keep it high on a mantle or hanging on a wall.
